    2026 Africa Talent Report

Talent supply, hiring demand, salary ranges, and the fastest-growing roles across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Egypt.

Africa's professional talent pool is growing faster than any other region's, and in 2026 the five markets CareerBuddy covers — Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Egypt — carry the bulk of that supply. Senior software engineers earn $28,000–$45,000 a year in USD, mid-level product professionals $14,500–$24,000, and employer-of-record employment costs $379–$549 per employee per month. Engineering, data and AI, and revenue roles account for most open hiring briefs, and CareerBuddy shortlists in four days.

    Africa talent supply

Supply is not evenly spread. Nigeria and Egypt carry the volume, South Africa the regulated-industry depth, Kenya the operations bench, and Ghana the English-first finance back office. Every figure in this section is third-party and cited — labour force from the World Bank, professional developer baselines from Google and Accenture, growth from BCG, and account counts from GitHub.

Labour force: World Bank / ILO modelled estimate, indicator SL.TLF.TOTL.IN, 2024. Professional developers: Google & Accenture, Africa Developer Ecosystem Report 2021. The 2026 column compounds the 2021 baseline for five years at the 21% annual growth rate BCG measured for Africa (2019–2024). GitHub accounts count all account holders, not only working professionals, and are shown separately for that reason. Combined labour force across the five markets: 212.1M people.

    Methodology

    What the report measures

Three things: talent supply (how many professionals a market can realistically field), hiring demand (what employers are actually briefing us to fill), and pay (what those hires cost). Salary figures are annual gross base salary in USD, excluding employer statutory contributions, which are modelled separately per country.

    First-party data

Demand shares, year-on-year movement, time-to-shortlist, retention, and every salary range come from CareerBuddy's own recruitment pipeline — placements closed, offers made, and search briefs open across the twelve months preceding 2026-08-01. This is dataset version 2026.1, the same numbers behind our salary calculator and client quotes. Derived from CareerBuddy's placement, offer and open-brief data in the twelve months preceding the release date, across the five countries covered.

    Third-party data

Supply figures are published third-party data, not our own. Labour force totals are the World Bank / ILO modelled estimates for 2024 (indicator SL.TLF.TOTL.IN), pulled directly from the World Bank API. Professional developer baselines are the country counts in Google and Accenture's Africa Developer Ecosystem Report 2021 — the last exercise that counted professional developers per African market. The 2026 column compounds each 2021 baseline for five years at 21% a year, the growth rate Boston Consulting Group measured for Africa's developer population between 2019 and 2024. GitHub account counts are a different measure entirely — every account holder, not only working professionals — so they are shown in their own column and never mixed into the professional estimate.

    Limitations

Our demand data reflects the market as CareerBuddy experiences it clearing — employers who hire remote and distributed teams across Africa. It over-weights technology, fintech, and business-services employers, and under-weights public sector and local-only SME hiring. Salary ranges describe roles paid in USD or pegged to it; local-currency-only roles pay materially less. The modelled 2026 developer column applies one continent-wide growth rate to every market, so it will overstate slower markets and understate faster ones; treat it as an order of magnitude, not a count. The dataset refreshes twice a year.
