01Hiring in Africa

How can a US company hire African employees?

A US company has three routes: incorporate a local entity, employ through an Employer of Record, or engage the person as a contractor. For one to twenty hires, the EOR is almost always right — no entity, compliant local payroll, and first payroll about 10 business days after signing.

    02Key facts
    Entity setup
    8–12 weeks
    EOR setup
    10 business days
    Entity break-even
    ~20+ hires per market
    Contractor risk
    Misclassification

    03The three routes compared

The decision is mostly about headcount per market and how long you plan to stay. Below roughly twenty employees in one country, an entity rarely pays for itself.

    • Local entity — full control, 8–12 weeks and material setup cost, ongoing local filings and a resident director in some markets
    • Employer of Record — no entity, compliant contracts and payroll, priced per employee per month
    • Contractor — fastest and cheapest, but the person is not your employee and misclassification exposure sits with you

    04What US employers get wrong

Paying an African hire as a 1099-style contractor while directing their hours, tools and priorities is the single most common mistake. Local labour authorities test the substance of the relationship, not the label on the invoice — and the liability lands on the US company.

    05Practical sequence

Benchmark the salary in local currency, pick the employment route, sign the order form, and run onboarding in parallel with equipment and access provisioning. CareerBuddy can supply the shortlist and be the employer of record on the same contract.

    Frequently asked

Do we need a US-side tax filing for an African employee?+

Not when the person is employed by an in-country entity or an Employer of Record — they are taxed locally. Your side is a services invoice. Confirm treatment with your own tax adviser.

How do we pay people in local currency?+

The EOR invoices you in USD and pays the employee in local currency on the local payroll cycle, handling FX and statutory remittances.
